Creating INDULGENCE
Every still-life painting involves countless decisions about colour, composition, and layering detail.
When starting INDULGENCE, I focused on form, texture, and a delicate sense of detail, aiming to create a painting that feels both rich and nuanced.
Inspiration Behind ‘iNDULGENCE’
Indulgence is rooted in the natural world and subtle moments of beauty. Figs and pomegranates are more than just fruit; they carry historical and symbolic associations of abundance, temptation, and richness.
Although the painting appears to be a simple still-life at first glance, beneath the surface it evokes themes of sin, temptation, and desire. Exploring these ideas allowed the piece to become more than a study of objects; it became a narrative about sensory experience and visual storytelling.
Symbolism and Meaning
Whilst being a still-life, the painting is infused with subtle storytelling. The figs and pomegranates suggest luxury, nourishment, and the fleeting nature of pleasure, inviting viewers to linger and form their own interpretations. This aligns with my wider practice: creating original artwork that encourages curiosity and emotional engagement.
Creative Process
The painting began with loose sketches and composition studies, observing shapes, textures, and contrasts between the figs and pomegranates. After finalising the sketch, I started with a detailed underpainting, then layered acrylics on canvas, building depth through glazes and subtle patterns.
Key elements of the process:
Composition: arranging fruits to create flow, tension, and focus
Layered textures: give the painting a tactile, alive quality
Colour exploration: balancing rich reds, purples, and warm highlights
Detail work: small highlights and shadowing that bring the piece to life
This approach ensures INDULGENCE feels inviting, expressive, and rich in detail — hallmarks of my personal style.
